[ SURRENDER ]

“I want to rethink ‘surrender’ as an active verb.”
-Brian Eno
[ SURRENDER ] is my senior thesis exhibition for my undergraduate degree in printmaking at University of Virginia.
In this multimedia composition, dozens of hours of my own personal digital field recordings were divided into nine chapters and transferred to 45 individual cassette tapes. Each chapter’s unique packaging is comprised of a digital image printed on translucent vellum which, overlaid upon an intaglio etching, creates cover artwork for the cassette case.
Visitors to the exhibition are invited to pick any tape from the cassette rack and listen to it on any of the available cassette players while examining the tape’s artwork.
With this exhibition, I hope to examine the objective vs. subjective, re-frame the idea of obsolescence, and ultimately confront the impossible task of re-enchanting the past.
